The Council of Alcácer do Sal is the second largest in the country. It is divided into four parishes: Comporta, São Martinho, Torrão and União das Freguesias de Alcácer do Sal (Santa Maria do Castelo and Santiago) and Santa Susana; the municipality is crossed by the Sado River and, in part, is part of the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve; this reserve is developed along about 23,160 hectares, most of which corresponds to wetlands, including canals, creeks and marshes; more rural than urban, it is attractive to tourists who dazzles in contact with nature. Extensive rice fields embellish its fields.
